In our next show (opening on August 29) the German artist Roland Stratmann will show his work Munich 72. The texture of 580 postcards from Israel and Munich, all mailed between the sixties and eighties, build the base for two large-sized drawings. Both works on paper refer to each other. Some of the travel reports in the postcards speak of the occurrences of the Olympia-Assassination in Munich in 1972.
Stratmann focuses on these text excerpts by superimposing symbols of our media-stamped memory. The large-scale ink drawings with their combination of text and image overlay the tapestry-like collection of postcards. This layering effect seeks to bridge the temporal and spatial distance of the massages in the postcards. Current events begin to resonate by viewing the past in this way. The “massages to home” in the postcards clearly communicate the collective prejudices and social climate of the times, and as we alternate between this textual sphere and the visual field of drawing, images of cultural distortion and misunderstanding become apparent.
Roland Stratmann lives and works in Berlin. He studied fine art at the Universität der Künste Berlin until 1990. In his artwork Stratmann broach the issue of migration and foreignness with different media and materials. In 1991 he was awarded winner of the Stipendium Junge Kunst and in 2000 he was an artist in residence in Istanbul. In 2006 he got the Tempelhof Schöneberger Art Price and in 2008 won the first price for public art for the project Passage Karl-Marx-Strasse. In 2009 his artwork Neukoellner Tor, located in Berlin, was awarded with the National Award for Integrated Urban Development and Architecture. His work has been shown in many international exhibitions and museum and is represented in several private and public collections.

580 gelaufene Ansichtskarten aus Israel und München aus den 1960er bis 1980er Jahren bilden mit ihren handschriftlichen Texturen das Trägermaterial für zwei großformatige Zeichnungen von Roland Stratmann. Die beiden Papierarbeiten beziehen sich aufeinander. Einige der Reiseberichte auf den Postkarten verweisen auf die Ereignisse des Olympia-Attentats von 1972 in München. Stratmann greift diese Textzitate auf und bringt sie mit Bildmotiven unserer medial geprägten Erinnerung zusammen. Die großflächigen Tuschezeichnungen, in ihrer Kombination aus Text und Bild, überlagern das zum Wandteppich zusammengefügte Postkartenkonvolut. Durch diese Überzeichnung wird die zeitliche und räumliche Distanz zu den Mitteilungen und Reiseerlebnissen von damals überbrückt. Im Blick auf das Vergangene klingt die Sicht auf aktuelle Geschehnisse mit an. So werden anhand der Nachrichten „in die Heimat“ kollektive Urteile und Stimmungen deutlich und in Wechselwirkung mit den Zeichnungen entstehen Sinnbilder der interkulturellen Verkennungen.
